Piers Morgan has taken another bizarre dig at Mary Earps after she was named as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year by discrediting her achievements in 2023.

Earps, 30, won the prestigious prize on Tuesday thanks to a public vote after a tremendous year. The Manchester United superstar saved a penalty in England's Women's World Cup final defeat to Spain and won the tournament's Golden Glove award.

Earps also picked up the same prize in the Women's Super League and is the most recent recipient of FIFA's The Best Women's Goalkeeper award. She also picked up two trophies with England, winning the Women's Finalissima and Arnold Clark Cup.

Yet Morgan believes Earps didn't deserve to win her most recent accolade. The TV presenter criticised the public's decision immediately after the vote and has now doubled down on the most recent episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, his talkTV show.

"Mary Earps seems a thoroughly decent human being with bags of personality and is an excellent women's goalkeeper, playing for England at the peak of her career," ranted Morgan. "But this year was not the best for her or the Lionesses."

Morgan then criticised the Lionesses for losing the World Cup final and failing to qualify for next summer's Olympics in France. He insisted he was "equally scathing" when England won the Team of the Year prize at SPOTY after losing the men's Euros final.

Morgan then referred to the campaign to have Earps' England shirt sold by Nike as a replica, describing it as "virtuous". He also highlighted United's failure to win silverware after they lost the Women's FA Cup final 1-0 to Chelsea at Wembley in May.

Earps finished ahead of cricketer Stuart Broad in second and Katarina Johnson-Thompson in third in the SPOTY vote. Frankie Dettori (horse racing), Alfie Hewett (wheelchair tennis) and Rory McIlroy (golf) were the other three nominees for the prize.

Morgan questioned Earps winning ahead of McIlroy, Broad, Dettori and "poor old" Ronnie O'Sullivan, who wasn't nominated for the award. He added: "It looks to me like that terrible scourge of virtue-signalling box-ticking has crept into this once great award.

"It's become the national equivalent of a participation medal... This is where we've gone. A country that celebrates mediocrity over winning. And when you do that, society inevitably becomes mediocre itself, which is exactly how so many people feel right now."

Morgan's view has been dismissed by many fans, who point out the double standards in his assessment. Broad failed to win the Ashes, McIlroy failed to win a major for the ninth year on the bounce (although he did win the Ryder Cup as part of Team Europe), and O'Sullivan failed to win the World Snooker Championship (but did claim the UK title).

Earps has been applauded for her latest achievement. Her England team-mate Beth Mead, who won SPOTY last year, wrote on X: "MY HERO! SPOTY 2023 WINNER MARY EARPS... Couldn't think of a more deserving person to pass it on too!"
