Sir Cliff Richard might be years older than the retirement age - but he still wants to try out new things for his career; like cracking the American charts.

The 83-year-old pop singer has been churning out tunes since 1958 and has scored seven UK number one albums and 14 UK number one singles in the years since. However, chart success in the USA has evaded the Living Doll singer - with only three tracks managing to crash the top 10 in the past 65 years.

But that hasn’t stopped Sir Cliff from dreaming - and he still hopes to one day land a number one hit in the USA before he hangs up his microphone for good. The star is reportedly eyeing duets with major American artists in a bid to boost his chances - with Taylor Swift in his sights.

The singer seems to be planning to pull a leaf out of the books of Sir Elton John and Sir Tom Jones who have often duetted with younger singers to keep them relevant - with Sir Elton having a number one hit with Dua Lipa for their song Cold Heart and Sir Tom teaming up with The Stereophonics and The Cardigans to pull him back into the charts in the 1990s. However, Sir Cliff seems to be waiting for 34-year-old Taylor to call him rather than him calling her.

He told The Sun: “She’s the biggest artist on the planet. If she asked me, I’d say, ‘Yes please’, because I’m sure it would be a big hit. And it might be an introduction for me in America because I’ve failed in America, apart from what Elton did for me with two songs.”

Sir Cliff does have his eyes on some British talent too - as he admits he would happily settle for a duet with Ed Sheeran, who hit number one with Sir Elton in 2021 with their song Merry Christmas. Sir Cliff said: “Ed Sheeran . . . now he does write some terrific songs, and there’s a certain melodic value to them as well.” He also backed Ed for confronting a recent plagiarism case - which a judge threw out of court when other songwriters claimed the Norfolk lad had stolen their tunes.

Earlier this year, Sir Cliff was hit with a backlash when he claimed he once turned down the chance to meet Elvis Presley as he said the American music legend looked too fat to be photographed with him. Appearing on This Morning in November, Sir Cliff quipped: "He'd put on a lot of weight. I thought, 'If I'm taking a photograph with him, and it's going to be hanging on my refrigerator, he's gotta look good. I put it off, and then, of course, he died.”
