Sergio Aguero believes Manchester United are "one of the biggest threats" to Manchester City 's hopes of winning a fourth straight Premier League title.

The Argentine claimed several league triumphs whilst at the Etihad and believes those on the red half of the city are a genuine danger for Pep Guardiola's men. Aguero's comments come despite United enduring one of their worst starts to a season in decades.

Already Erik ten Hag's side have lost seven of their 17 league games with pressure mounting on the Dutch coach. Their remit appears to be another season in the top four, which could prove a challenge, yet Aguero thinks they, and others, could halt City's charge for history.

He told Stake.com : "You can never sleep on Man United at this stage of the season. They are one of the biggest threats to Man City’s Premier League title. I also think Tottenham are title contenders, who have improved a lot under Ange Postecoglou. Even despite their ups and downs, Newcastle are also in with a chance of the title as they always put up a fight."

No side has ever won the Premier League four times on the bounce with City aiming to do just start after their treble success. They made light work of United earlier in the season, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford, but have struggled for results in recent weeks and are five points off the top.

United meanwhile battled to a point at Liverpool last time out. It ended a run of embarrassing defeats at Anfield as they held the Reds to a goalless draw. It came eight days after they were humbled by Bournemouth, who won 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have failed to mount a meaningful title charge since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson. They've registered several second place finishes, but never in the past decade have they threatened to challenge City's dominance of the top flight.

Guardiola chuckled earlier this season when he was asked whether United, who lost four of their opening seven games, were title contenders. Despite that he did back them to eventually click into gear. "Well they didn't start like they expected, like Chelsea. But always, they are Man United, and Chelsea sooner or later they will take the rhythm," he said. Currently City are six points ahead of United heading into the festive period.
