A resilient dog that was missing for seven years had been living off scraps that the locals had put out for a badger.

In a tale that has captured the hearts of the people of West Sussex, Rosie, the black terror, showcased an incredible heart, fending for herself without the love of her owners. Back in March 2017, the cuddly creature was rescued by a family, but in a devastating turn of events, she ran away within 24 hours.

Tragically, the new owners couldn't find their loveable hound and feared the worst. At the start of December, a passerby noticed the animal in Crawley Down, which is surrounded by woodland. Realising something was amiss, the local contacted the Lost Dog Recovery UK South.

In a bid to help Rosie, the non-profit organisation sent volunteers to rescue her so they could conduct a health check and discover her identity. Utilising their skills, they set up several hidden cameras so they could work out her feeding patterns before setting the requisite trap to bring her in, MyLondon reported.

Explaining the mission, Hannah, a volunteer, said: "It was quite amazing, really; Rosie was a stray for [over] six and a half years, we believe. Her family lost her in March 2017 and shared flyers and Facebook appeals. Soon, they just became another family who lost their dog that didn't come back."

Heather believes that Rosie likely fled her new owners because she was scared. Fortunately, while many dogs would have fallen foul to life as a stray, the adorable animal, exhibited a remarkable fighting spirit. The volunteer added: "Those who lived nearby suggested she was cared for, in a way that she had been eating food left out by neighbours for wildlife. Some had even spotted her, but didn't report it."

On December 9, the volunteers crafted an excellent trap, with cooked chicken placed at the back of a cage in the area of the woods Rosie frequented. After setting things up, the group sat in their van and treated themselves to a delicious pizza, while they monitored ring cameras to see what Rosie was up to. Unsurprisingly, the dog couldn't resist the allure of food and was subsequently transported to the vets.

Heather claimed: "She is shell-shocked, and will be for a little while. Rosie is in good condition, considering she has been fending for herself."

Unfortunately, Rosie's old family are not able to take her back, but are reportedly delighted that she's safe. However, with her remarkable story considered, she won't be short of potential parents.

Heather said: "It would be lovely for her to be warm by the fireplace this winter and for her senior years. No elderly dog wants to fend for itself and search for water in the summer and warmth in the winter." The organisation said it will release more details soon about where Rosie is and how she can be adopted."
