Kaley Cuoco nearly lost a leg

The actress who played the socially savvy Penny - unlike her awkward scientist buddies - was having a horse riding lesson back in 2010. However, the huge animal suddenly flung her from the saddle on to the ground.

The horse then reportedly attempted to jump over Kaley before it landed on her leg. Initially, doctors thought they would have to partially amputate her leg due to the extent of the injury. But luckily metal rods were instead used to save the limb and she was able to recover.

Kayley was missing for a couple of episodes due to the accident, though, and when she did return she stayed behind furniture to cover her leg. In one scene, Penny is a bartender at The Cheesecake Factory so she can remain behind the bar.

Two of the stars dated in secret for years

The big romance of the show for everyone was between Penny and Leonard, played by Johnny Galecki. Thankfully the will-they-won't-they? storyline ends up in a happy place for all. But did you know that the actors secretly dated in real life for two years?

Kaley and Johnny kept the relationship to themselves and the news was only revealed when the pair split up in 2010. The actress spilled the beans to CBS Watch at the time of the break-up saying that they could never do anything because they were always attempting to keep the romance under wraps. While Johnny said that if they had spoken openly about their relationship then it would have "conflicted" with people's acceptance of their respective characters.

Mayim Bialik has a neuroscience PhD in real life

The show has plenty of brainy boffins in it and Amy Farrah Fowler was certainly one of them. But the actress who plays the neuroscientist, Mayim Bialik, has an actual PhD in neuroscience in real life. She earned it in 2007 from UCLA having been accepted at Harvard and Yale.

On top of this, the former 'Blossom' star also earned a BS degree in neuroscience, Hebrew studies and Jewish studies with her dissertation on an investigation of hypothalamic activity in patients with Prader-Willi syndrome. It had the impressive title of 'Hypothalamic regulation in relation to maladaptive, obsessive-compulsive, affiliative, and satiety behaviors in Prader-Willi syndrome'.

The show faced a copyright infringement

The song 'Soft Kitty' was a running joke throughout the show and a tune that Sheldon's mother used to sing to him when he was ill. However, the amusing tune almost landed the sitcom in hot water, legally at least.

Margaret Chase Perry and Ellen Newlin Chase claimed their mother, Edith Newlin, was the person who wrote the song. They said the show stole the song after it was added to a book of school nursery songs and that they owned the rights to since their mother died. The sisters tried to sue for a copyright infringement lawsuit but the judge threw the case out of court in the end.

Someone tried to sue the theme tune

The show's theme tune also caused some potential legal bother for its writers. It was recorded by the Barenaked Ladies after producer Bill Prady and creator Chuck Loore asked singer Ed Robertson to write them a song for it. Band member Stephen Page left in 2009 and a few years later he tried to unsuccessfully sue the band as he claimed he was owed 20% of the song’s royalties as he believed Ed was the only making any money from it.

The show was ripped of in Belarus

They say that imitation is sincerest form of flattery and one country took it to the extremes. 'The Theorist' was a TV show in Belarus that appeared to be suspiciously like 'The Big Bang Theory'. In it, the storyline was concerned with four scientists living next to a waitress.

Even the characters names were virtually the same - Sheldon, Leo, Hovart, Raj and Natasha - and it transpired that every episodes was merely a Russian translation. Chuck only found out in 2010 and once the Belarusian actors also discovered it they quit the show and its production was ceased.
