Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow are both due to be named CBEs in the New Year’s Honours list after their stunning fundraising efforts.

It was confirmed on Friday evening that both rugby league icons will receive awards in the first list led by King Charles since his coronation. Sinfield and Burrow have been working closely over the last few years to raise awareness and funds dedicated to motor neurone disease.

The former recently embarked on a 7 in 7 ultra marathon challenge across the UK. Having crossed the finish line in London, the ex-Leeds Rhinos star was clearly emotional.

Speaking after finishing his latest challenge, he said: “Hello London! Thank you for coming out. We’re all pretty shot, we’re all pretty tired but seeing so many faces along the route it was a massive lift for us all. We all know why we are here and we hope we’ve sent the right message out.

“The MND community is a beautiful community and it needs all of us to keep fighting. The awareness we’ve generated this week has been enormous and in Rob’s name.”

Sinfield added: "Fundraising is so important. We tried to push this morning how important the money is because that’s the thing that’s going to shift the dial for us.

“That’s the thing that’s going to get us a cure. It’s also the thing that’s going to make sure families are looked after properly. If there’s one thing you leave today with today from our team, it’s that.”

Burrow has been fighting motor neurone disease for four years and joined Sinfield on one of his challenges earlier this year. The pair completed the Leeds Marathon together back in May, with Sinfield carrying Burrow over the finishing line.

Across their numerous challenges, Sinfield has managed to raise more than £9million in honour of his friend. Tanya Curry, Chief Executive of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, paid tribute to him after his latest achievement.

She said: “Like everyone who has followed Kevin Sinfield’s epic challenge to complete seven ultra marathons in seven days we, at the MND Association, are in awe of everything he’s achieved.

“The money raised, in honour of the 5000 people living with MND in the UK right now, will make an incredible difference to the care and support people receive both locally and nationally, and will help to fund vital research to bring us closer to a cure for this devastating disease. We are so grateful to Kevin and his team for their enormous efforts and for all those who are inspired to support him.”
