Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has once again fuelled speculation of an imminent return to the Premier League with a cryptic social media post.

The veteran shot-stopper, 33, is still unattached after departing Old Trafford at the end of his contract in the summer, but has been linked with a whole host of different clubs, particularly over the last few weeks.

As a free agent, De Gea is able to sign for clubs outside of the transfer window, meaning he could return before the start of January. And after teasing a move in recent weeks, the Spaniard has now got fans talking again after sharing a cryptic message.

On his Instagram account, De Gea shared a picture of goalkeeping gloves on a field to his 15 million followers with an animated message which read: "Work, work, work". Unsurprisingly, the rumour mill on social media has gone into overdrive since the post.

De Gea has recently emerged as a top target for Newcastle, who are without current No.1 Nick Pope due to a dislocated shoulder. The England international is expected to miss the majority of the campaign and De Gea would represent a quality, experienced option to stand in for Eddie Howe 's side.

Martin Dubravka has deputised in Pope's stead, but the Magpies are expected to assess their options in the coming weeks. But they are not the only Premier League club mulling over a move for De Gea.

It emerged last month that Manchester United were also ready to approach De Gea in a bid to tempt him back to Old Trafford. Andre Onana, the goalkeeper who was signed to replace De Gea back in the summer, could miss four matches when he jets off to the Africa Cup of Nations next month.

It remains to be seen, though, whether or not United will make a formal approach to De Gea - and whether or not the former Atletico Madrid man would entertain the idea of returning to Old Trafford less than 12 months after leaving.

De Gea has already turned down approaches from numerous clubs, including lucrative proposals from the Saudi Pro League. However, The Mail claimed at the start of the month that he is 'more receptive' to offers now and would consider a return to England.
