Andre Braugher was a double winner when he landed a coveted role on a celebrated US drama series.

The celebrated actor landed the part of Detective Frank Pembleton on the critically-acclaimed show Homicide: Life on the Street, and he played the beloved character for six years, until 1998. He won an Emmy for his portrayal of the Baltimore Police Department detective, and also, managed to win the heart of one of his co-stars on the show.

He met Ami Brabson while filming Homicide: Life on the Street, as she played his on-screen wife Mary Pembleton for 19 episodes, and the couple tied the knot in December 1991. They later reunited on screen in two episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit - Child’s Welfare and Justice Denied - with Ami playing Judge Karyn Blake and Andre portraying defence attorney Bayard Ellis.

Ami and Andre went on to have three sons together - Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley - and both continued to work in Hollywood, with Ami landing roles in shows such as Law & Order, Bull, Power, and The Jury, and she also works a singer and producer. Ami has also starred in stage shows such as The Settler and Fences, and received her Masters of Fine Arts after studying at New York University's Tisch Graduate School of Acting.

In 2013, Andre landed the role of Captain Ray Holt on the TV series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and was beloved by a whole new generation of fans, and they were heartbroken by news of his tragic death. He passed away on Monday following a short illness, and stars on the show have already paid tribute to their co-star.

Terry Crews, who played Sergeant Terry Jeffords on the show, said it was an honour sharing “eight glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent”. He sweetly added: “You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you… You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”

Andre was nominated for a total of 11 Emmy Awards during his celebrated career, and his final movie appearance was the drama She Said, which followed two journalists who unearthed allegations against Harvey Weinstein. His Netflix show The Residence, where he played the character A. B. Wynter, will be released posthumously.
