Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has conceded the injury to Alexis Mac Allister is more complicated than he first realised.

The midfielder limped off during Liverpool's 2-1 win over Sheffield United last Wednesday, and played no part in the follow-up win at Crystal Palace at the weekend. And the Argentinian hasn't travelled to Belgium for his side's final Europa League group game in Belgium against Union SG, with Klopp pressed on the matter in his pre-match press conference.

“I am obviously not a doctor but they explain it to me pretty much every day why he is not ready yet and it is obviously a bit more tricky than we thought in the first moment," he explained. “The other boy stepped on his knee and the stud went through pretty much the muscle onto the bone."

And the German manager conceded it was a waiting game for the player and the club: "Now we have to wait until the bone is healed and until Macca can deal with the pain, because it is pretty painful," he added.

“Macca is actually a super-tough guy so we have probably to make sure just from an infection point of view nothing happens. That’s really important. I never had this injury for one of my players before but now we have it. I hope it will not take that long, I would like to say it’s day by day – but that would look like he could maybe play the next game but he will not be ready for that as well."

It means the 24-year-old will also be unavailable for the visit of Manchester United on Sunday. Indeed, a picture on his Instagram account this week showed him sat down with his right leg in a brace.

Klopp has also had to come to terms with losing Joel Matip for the remainder of the season. However, Liverpool's injury issues are nothing compared to that of their rivals, with United set to be missing 13 players for the trip to Anfield.

The Red Devils lost Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw in the first half of their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night. Maguire pulled up with a groin problem in the first half, while Shaw picked up a hamstring strain in the closing moments of the opening 45 minutes.

The pair join a huge injury list which also includes defenders Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Tyrell Malacia, midfielders Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount and winger Amad Diallo. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial missed the Bayern game through illness, while Jadon Sancho is still exiled and skipper Bruno Fernandes will be suspended.
