Darts star Gerwyn Price has opened a fish and chip shop as he prepares to mount a challenge for his second world championship.

The Iceman won the tournament in 2021, but fell at the quarter-final stage in last year's championship. Price gets his 2023 campaign underway next Monday night, but also has matters of business on his mind as he continues his preparations.

The Welshman has previously opened a cafe in his home village of Markham. But with the venture struggling amid the current economic headwinds, Price has now decided to launch a fish and chip shop, which his cafe will move into.

He told the Daily Star: “The cafe's not doing too good at the minute – business is a little bit up and down, so I'm opening a fish-and-chip shop and the cafe is going to move in with that. With the cost of living crisis, footfall in the village is a bit slower so I'm branching out into fish and chips and turning the cafe into a flat.”‌

Price was thrashed in the quarter-finals of last year's tournament by Gabriel Clemens. The hostility of the crowd got to the Welshman, who responded by wearing ear defenders in an attempt to block out the noise.

Ultimately, it did not work, with Clemens hammering him 5-1 to reach the semi-finals, where he was knocked out by eventual champion Michael Smith. But the Iceman has insisted he does not regret putting them on.

Price made it clear he would do repeat the stunt, though the PDC have since banned him from doing so. The Welshman did admit though that putting on the ear defenders only made the crowd noise worse.

“It's something I would do again – it shouldn't happen on that stage, but I did what I did and I can't do it again because they are banned now. The PDC said no more headphones," Price added.

"Don't get me wrong, I don't regret it. There were obviously more negatives than positives. I would do exactly the same thing again, but did it block out the crowd? No – if anything, it was 10 times worse. But I was just trying to prove a point.”

Fifth-seed Price will take on Connor Scutt or Krzysztof Kciuk in his first game of the tournament. And darts icon Wayne Mardle believes the Welshman has a real chance of winning his second championship.

"There are so many that are capable of winning. It all depends on who goes bang. If Michael Smith goes bang again, he wins. Same with Michael van Gerwen. But, for me, it's all about Luke Humphries, 'Cool Hand'. He can't do anything wrong at the minute," he told Sky Sports.

"I like either Gary Anderson or Gerwyn Price coming from that particular part of the draw as well. But I've been right in selecting Luke Humphries for the last couple of months, and I'm not going to jump ship now."
