It's safe to say that us Brits love an avocado. Whether you mash it up and pop it on toast with a fried egg or you have it in a salad, it makes a delightful addition to a variety of meals.

The only downside to this creamy fruit (yes, it's a fruit) is that it spoils very easily. There's nothing more disappointing than carving an avocado to see a brown sludge staring back at you - particularly given how pricey they are.

Thankfully, one food expert has spilled the beans on how to keep your avocados fresher for longer - even when they are ripe. Unsurprisingly, it's all about how you store them.

Charles Haverfield, Packaging Executive at US Packaging and Wrapping, told The Express how to keep your avocados as green as can be.

He explained: "To slow down the ripening process and prevent your avocado from becoming a mushy brown mess, pop it in the fridge which will help keep it firmer and fresher for longer."

He went onto say that one quick tip for preparing avocados for any meal is to leave cutting them for as long as possible to limit the time when the fruit is exposed to the elements.

This will also stop it from turning brown for as long as two weeks, according to the expert.

If you find that your avocado is not ripe enough to use then Charles has also revealed clever ways to speed up the ripening process.

"Keeping your avocado in a warm, sunny spot will help the ripening process go quicker. But be sure to keep testing the avocado's firmness to prevent it from overripening," he said.

In addition, storing your avocados in a fruit bowl with other fruits like bananas and apples will help them along, as they release a ripening gas.

If your avocado is not ripe enough for the fridge, keeping it on a countertop away from direct sunlight would be the best option.

He stresses that one viral trend for storing avocados in water is not a good move for the fruit as it comes with the risk of being contaminated.

Charles continued: "A better solution if you want to prolong the shelf life of your cut avocados is to squirt them with lemon juice. Citrus fruits work great for preserving avocados since the acid reduces the activity of polyphenol oxidase, slowing down avocado flesh from browning."
