The UK is going to be hit by hurricane-force winds this weekend, forecasters have warned, and if you are someone who loves being outdoors, you will know how important it is to watch the weather and dress properly before going on walks.

The Met Office's forecast from Saturday to Monday shows weather conditions will remain unsettled, with showers or longer spells of rain expected. The weather service said coastal gales are likely in some places including Wales, with wind reaching high speeds.

If you are planning a hike over the weekend, being aware of the weather is a must. But while low temperatures can be handled by wearing multiple layers of clothes, wind can often become unpleasant and also dangerous while on a mountain.

Wearing windproof clothes is essential at this time of year especially when it comes to activities such as hiking, camping and skiing. A windproof material can effectively physically block the wind from penetrating through your clothing to your body, keeping the temperature under your clothing stable and comfortable.

Other ways to protect yourself from the wind include always wearing a hat to cover your head and eyes. Wool is a good material with thermoregulating properties which can also wick moisture away.

When spending time outdoors in the colder months, you should also make sure your hands are protected. This is because our fingers and palms are the first part of the body to feel the effect of strong winds - and can become numb quickly.

Apart from being uncomfortable, this is also dangerous in difficult terrain such as mountains where you need a strong grip, explains outdoor clothes brand ZAJO. Gloves made of windproof materials are recommended as they can protect your hands while doing sports all year round, not just in winter.

Another important way to shield from the wind, not only when hiking but also when skiing, is to protect your face with a multifunctional scarf. In harsher weather conditions, some also opt for a balaclava which provides more comprehensive protection.

Wearing good-quality socks is also key because feet can take a beating from the wind even if they are hidden in boots. The clothing brand said: "Socks are an overlooked piece of equipment that we often underestimate, but it's quality socks that can make all the difference between enjoying a hike and coming home with frozen toes."
