There's nothing more satisfying than opening a new bottle of ketchup - but you may have you been doing it wrong all this time.

If your household gets through tomato sauce like there's no tomorrow, you know the gratification that comes with finally being able to start on a new one. Whatever you do, please shake the bottle first to prevent the first squirt from being too watery.

But, there's a little-known trick that prevents the inevitable mess that comes from ripping off the lid in a hurry. However, the viral tip has stirred debate - with some users branding it potentially unhygienic.

Posting on the TikTok account @absolutegeniux, one person shows how they remove the lid from a new bottle of Heinz Tomato Sauce and use the circular nozzle to pierce a hole in the seal. At the time of writing, the post has attracted thousands of likes and a whopping 1.9 million views.

One thrilled viewer said: "What, you mean I've been missing out on that for years struggling to open it pulling it bitting it losing my reason with the peel?" Not everybody in the comments section was impressed though, with some branding the hack as 'lazy'.

"I wouldn't do that," one user wrote. "The sauce will build up in the void and will start to go off." Another sarcastically commented: "If only they'd invent a sealing cover with little tabs on to make it easier to take off." While a third asked: "Is it really difficult to just peel off the cover?"

Earlier this year, Heinz finally settled the debate on whether you should keep your ketchup in the fridge or cupboard. The revelation came after a study of 2,000 people found that four in 10 Brits prefer to store the sauce in their cupboards.

But, Heinz says this is the wrong method - posting a controversial Tweet stating: "FYI: Ketchup. goes. in. the. fridge!" Ketchup lovers were left gobsmacked at the statement, with one fan replying: "Never, ever has it ever gone in my fridge, nor anybody else's."

Another joked: "Mmmm… A nice piping hot steak bake. Let me smother it with a condiment the same temperature as my milk."
