Steph's Packed Lunch warn Channel 4 is making 'big mistake' as final show airs

Fans of Steph's Packed Lunch have blasted Channel 4 for cancelling the daytime discussion show as they now fear the broadcaster will now become a "no-go" during the day.

Channel 4 announced that the show was facing the axe back in October this year. And in a statement the broadcaster claimed that it had made the tough decision to cancel the show due to audience viewing habits changing. Part of the statement read: "With audience habits changing quicker than ever, we have to make difficult decisions about which programmes to invest in to best drive our digital-first strategy and we have decided not to recommission Steph's Packed Lunch when its existing production contract ends in December 2023."

But within 15 minutes of the final episode kicking off today, fans took to social media to claim that Channel 4 have made a huge mistake. Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: "Other than #c4countdown, Channel 4 will become a no-go for daytime TV with the sheer ridiculous decision in cancelling #stephspackedlunch with the finale today."

Another person penned: "I'll miss Steph's Packed Lunch. It was a funny and warm daytime show you could dip into for a slice of wholesome tv. So unlike This Morning etc." A third person added: "You had something good, Channel 4. Such a big mistake letting it go. Thanks for the fun, Steph #StephsPackedLunch."

And a fourth person commented: "Bit gutted it’s the last #StephsPackedLunch. Been my favourite show on daytime telly. Nice pace, never talks down to you & best of all - wonderfully northern. I’ll miss it." Chiming in on the online thread. a fifth person wrote: "Last ever #StephsPackedLunch Can’t believe it. As daytime shows go it’s really good. No fluffy up-themselves presenters. A range of guests outside the usual “promoting my book/tv show/product” crowd. Steph seems genuinely interested in her guests and asks decent questions."

Since it emerged that the show was facing the chop, Steph McGovern, 41, has remained tight-lipped. But earlier today the presenter decided to break her silence when she took to social media. Just hours before the final episode of the show, she had started to document her last day of filming as she posted a sentimental picture on social media.

Sharing her feelings with her 122,000 Instagram followers, she posted an image of her cue cards, her microphone and her earpiece that she uses during filming. She captioned the picture saying: "For one last time... today 12 - 2.10 packed lunch on Channel 4 - episode 675. My cue cards, my earpiece and my microphone."

Channel 4 said in a statement: "We remain as committed as ever to our mission to help level up the TV industry outside London and to our 50% origination out of London target. We will be reinvesting the budget previously committed to Steph's Packed Lunch into other nations and regions productions."

It continued: "We have almost 500 roles outside of London and this will continue to increase over the next few years. We will continue to build on the legacy of the show, evolving what we do in line with our digital ambitions whilst continuing to reflect the lives of, and give a voice to, all our audiences across the UK and hope to work with Steph on other projects soon."
