An anonymous tradie has gone viral for his "respectful" gesture at a Subway shop that left people online praising him.

The tradesman won the hearts of people online after a photo was shared of a pair of dirty work boots outside the entrance to a Subway shop in Brisbane, Australia, which indicated the hungry man had been thoughtful enough to take off his shoes before walking into the sandwich shop for his lunch.

After the picture went viral, many commenters said it was rare to see someone be so considerate, especially as his sweet gesture meant that Subway staff wouldn't have to clean up his muddy footprints when he left.

The image was shared on multiple forums on Reddit, but seemed to originate on r/Australia, where someone posted it alongside a caption which read: "Highly respect the tradie who took off his dirty boots before heading into Subway."

Commenters on that post were quick to heap praise on the mystery man for his behaviour. One person said: "I would hire this guy because he knows how to care about people who like things clean," while another added: "Not too many positive posts about Tradies on Reddit! That bloke has been raised right," and a third posted: "Possible marriage material."

The post was also shared on a Reddit forum for Subway, where someone wrote: "As a Subway employee, I tip my hat to this tradie." And commenters on the Subway version of the post praised the man too, as they said: "We get so many people in my store that do construction and always leave little piles of dirt everywhere, it's so annoying."

There was also one commenter who said they often give discounts to tradies who are nice enough to take their shoes off before coming into their shop. They explained: "I work in a workwear and safety shop, I give a sneaky discount to those tradies who take their dirty boots off. I have to vacuum the floor after the filthy buggers who trample dirt and mud all through my shop, so I reward the good ones who are respectful."
