Eddie Howe breaks Newcastle's silence on David de Gea transfer after Pope injury
Eddie Howe insists that Newcastle United have not spoken to free agent David de Gea after reports linking the former Manchester United number one with a move to St James’ Park.
Newcastle's first-choice stopper Nick Pope is set for a lengthy spell on the treatment table after sustaining a shoulder injury in Saturday night’s win over Erik ten Hag’s United. And that has prompted speculation that the Toon could make a bid for De Gea, who has not played since leaving Old Trafford at the end of last season.
The former Spain stopper was earning £375,000 a week while at United and his wage demands remain high - explaining why he is yet to sign for a new club. And speaking ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League game against Everton on Thursday evening, Howe played down speculation of a deal, stating it is a chance for Martin Dubravka -who was De Gea’s deputy at United for the start of last season during an ill-fated loan move - and Loris Karius to impress.
“I’ve seen a lot of media headlines regarding goalkeepers and other players,’ Howe said. "We have not made any enquiries. If we were to recruit now we’d be recruiting in every area on the pitch. It’s a chance for the other keepers to consolidate their positions.”
Dubravka is expected to replace Pope in the short-term. He was looking for a way out of the club at the beginning of last season but ended up cutting his loan deal at Old Trafford short because of a shortage of opportunities. Howe added: ‘We really believe in Martin. ‘Martin is a high class goalkeeper, very good with his feet and distribution.”

There were initial fears that Pope could miss the rest of the season after dislocating his joint but Howe now says the estimation is a four-month layoff following surgery.
“He’s had a couple of appointments to see specialists. I am awaiting final news on what will happen. He will be operated on. It will be about four months. We were fearing the worst. He’s been in the best form since he has been at the football club.
“He is naturally down. Nick had the Euros ahead of him and there is still a chance for him. His main determination is to come back with us.”
