Jonathan Majors' ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari gave a tearful testimony as she opened up about the Marvel actor's alleged "violent temper" in the months leading up to his arrest.

Majors faces five misdemeanour charges following his March arrest for the alleged assault of Jabbari, including three for assault and two for harassment. Jabbari took to the stand on Tuesday as she told a Manhattan jury that her ex-boyfriend was prone to alleged fits of rage.

She claimed his temper escalated in the months leading up to his arrest and said he had been a "kind and loving partner" before becoming increasingly unable to control his "violent temper". During hours of the testimony, the 30-year-old professional dancer accused the 34-year-old Marvel actor of being a "controlling, manipulative" partner and claimed she "had to be perfect" during their relationship.

Jabbari also alleged he hurled household objects at the wall and repeatedly threatened to take his own life in the aftermath of their fights. She said he would often refer to himself as a "monster".

She said: "It felt like I was walking around on eggshells, I had to be perfect." Majors avoided eye contact with the British dancer, instead scribbling notes to his lawyer and flicking through a gold-leafed bible as she recounted his struggle to contain his "violent temper".

The alleged assault is said to have taken place on March 25, as the former couple were riding back to Manhattan from a dinner. Jabbari told the jury they had been involved in a heated argument over Majors' outbursts.

During the drive, she was leaning on his shoulder when he allegedly received a "romantic" text message sent by a woman named Cleopatra. Jabbari took the phone out of his hands and alleged Majors then twisted her arm behind her back in a position that left her in "excruciating" pain.

She told the court: "Next I felt a really hard blow across my head. He's very strong. I couldn't move. It feels very loud when you're hit in the head and just shocking."

Video from security cameras, which was shown to the jury, shows Majors running through the streets of Lower Manhattan after the alleged assault. Jabbari is seen chasing after him.

Priya Chaudhry, Major's attorney, described the allegations as a revenge plot to "ruin" the actor in her opening statements. She accused Jabbari of trying to "take away everything he has spent his whole life working for."

Pointing to her client's breakout roles in Creed III and his emergence as a key supervillain in the Marvel multiverse, Chaudhry said Majors' career "seemed unstoppable until he ended his relationship with Ms. Jabbari and she, hours later, made these false allegations." Since his arrest in March, an ad campaign for the US Army featuring Majors has been pulled and the release of Magazine Dreams, a Sundance award-winning film that he starred in, has been postponed.

Trial continues.
