Cold Weather Payments have been triggered in another 15 postcode areas in England, meaning thousands more people are now due to receive £25 towards their energy bills.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has today added parts of the East Midlands to the list of areas where temperatures have been low enough to qualify for the money. Last week it was announced that nearly 300 postcode areas in the North of England and in Northern Ireland would receive the payments, benefiting over 580,000 people.

Areas of Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Cumbria and the North East of England were among those which qualified. Now the DWP has revealed that 15 postcode areas in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and the Scottish Borders also reached the threshold to trigger the payments after temperatures fell below freezing between November 28 and December 4. You can see the full list of new triggers below.

It is estimated that 11,000 people in these areas will receive the Cold Weather Payment, and of these 4,000 are in receipt of Pension Credit. You can see the areas which will be eligible for cold weather payments this week in our interactive map.

Last year more than 5.5 million Cold Weather Payments were made by the DWP. The DWP says those claiming the following benefits may be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment; Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, Support for Mortgage Interest.

Not all those receiving these benefits will automatically receive a Cold Weather Payment. There are a number of factors which will determine whether a payment will be made - you can see full details on GOV.UK.

The payments are triggered if average temperatures in an area have been recorded at, or are forecast to be, below freezing for seven consecutive days. Recipients will be automatically paid £25 for each seven day period of cold weather running across the winter period between 1 November 2023 and 31 March 2024.
