Grandparents' Wetherspoons trip goes viral as strangers flood table with drinks

A grandparents' trip to Wetherspoons has gone viral after their grandson posted their table number on social media and got strangers to send them an endless stream of booze.

The couple were stunned when their grandson took them out to their local Wetherspoons pub and told them about a viral online game known only as 'Wetherspoons: The Game', in which you post your table number online and allow strangers to visit the Wetherspoons app to buy drinks for you.

After telling his grandparents the rules of the game, Mark Hamlet then took to the 'Wetherspoons: The Game' page on Facebook where he posted a picture of the couple alongside the name of the pub they were in and the table they were sitting at. He also told members of the group what his nan and grandad like to drink and urged people not to go too "crazy" as he had to "put them to bed" afterwards.

In his post, Mark wrote: "Brought nana and grandad out for their early night cap. Explained to them about the game ... I know it works as I've given a few in past. Nana thinks she is about to be cloned and have her pension account emptied! Let's show her we mean business. She's partial to a glass of Malbec or Merlot red. Grandad likes a pint!!! Nothing crazy guys, I've gotta put them to bed."

It didn't take long for people to flood the post with screenshots from the Wetherspoons app confirming they'd sent a round of drinks to the table, with most of them honouring Mark's wish for his nan to have a glass of wine and his grandad to have a beer. One person wrote alongside their proof: "Ordered a couple for you! Have a great night! My gran is my bestie so had to send a treat."

Someone else posted: "Incoming! Wine, beer, and a couple of shots for the young'uns," while another said: "Sent two half pints, one for you and one for grandad, and a wine for nan. Have a great night!", and a fourth added: "On its way, you cuties!". A few people were even kind enough to send some "nibbles" to the family to "soak it all up".

In photos shared throughout the night, the elderly couple could be seen surrounded by empty glasses including at least eight pints and five glasses of wine, while one snap even shows Mark's grandma holding a shot glass filled with a bright red liquid as she seemingly moved away from wine and onto something stronger.

After Mark's Facebook post went viral it was soon shared on other platforms including X, formerly known as Twitter, where someone said groups like Wetherspoons: The Game are among the reasons they could "never delete" Facebook.

They wrote: "Reason 52 why I can't delete Facebook: a group called 'Wetherspoons The Game!' in which you put a couple of photos of yourselves and explain the occasion, alongside the spoons you're in. If you've got a good post, people will send you a drink. Nana doesn't know what's hit her."

One person commented on the X post: "Things like this restore my faith in humanity," while someone else wrote: "This is the funniest thing I have ever seen. Look at Nana!," and a third said: "This is absolutely sensational."
