Sam Smith proved to be quite the fashion chameleon on Monday night as they sported two eye-grabbing outfits at the 2023 British Fashion Awards.

The 31-year-old singer-songwriter was not just a guest at the glitzy bash in London at the beginning of the week, they were also an award winner. Sam was the recipient of the Cultural Innovator award and looked very pleased indeed when they accepted the award.

But fashion fans might be calling for Sam to get a bonus gong after arriving in one stunning ensemble, before changing into something even more scene stealing. The awards were held at London's iconic Royal Albert Hall and A List stars – including Gwyneth Paltrow, Jodie Comer and Amal Clooney – braved bitter temperatures and pesky rain showers to celebrate the finest threads in the business.

And Sam arrived wearing a striking outfit consisting of a well tailored skirt, puffy-shouldered coat, tights and seriously high, platformed heels. The skirt, top and jacket were custom made by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood while jewels were supplied, and also custom made, by Pragnell Jewellery. Sam also carried a tiny handbag by Vivienne Westwood to complete the look.

But, once inside the Royal Albert Hall, Sam changed into an even more dramatic outfit. The Unholy singer wowed in a voluminous black dress with tulle, again designed by Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood. And this is what Sam wore to accept their award, which was handed over by actress and screenwriter Lena Dunham.

Speaking about the award Caroline Rush, chief executive officer at the British Fashion Council, called Sam "a true cultural innovator who has fearlessly pushed the boundaries of both fashion and entertainment". She added: "Smith's unapologetic and groundbreaking style choices have dominated the industry in 2023 and we are incredibly grateful for their continued support of U.K. designers."

Sam’s outfits were a hit with fans, with many taking to social media to applaud their bold fashion choices and to congratulate them on their award. One fan on X, previously called Twitter, branded Sam’s looks “Gorgeous”, another thanked the singer for their: “bold and daring fashion statements” - and another fan on Instagram praised the star for: “Always SLAYYINNGGGG.”

Many more fans showered praise on Sam's looks - with one writing: "You look absolutely GORGEOUS MY GOD!" And even fellow celebrity and singer Rufus Wainwright got involved in the praise - and shared a flirty message, writing to Sam: "Digging the beard I have to say! Sexy!"

Last year, Sam opened up to GQ Style about their fashion choices, explaining they used to be “so scared of fashion.” The star explained that being non-binary influenced their style, as well as their life.

Sam said: ”I've always felt gender non-conforming. And I've always felt non-binary trans. My whole life. And it wasn't until I had to sit in interviews every day and tell people my story again and again and again that I realised this narrative that was being created was only a small fraction of who I was.”
