Conor McGregor could return to the UFC earlier than anticipated after fears he would have to wait until the summer.

McGregor has not fought since he broke his leg in the second round of his third fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021. He had been expected to take on Chandler this year after the fighters were named as coaches in the latest series of The Ultimate Fighter.

But McGregor only recently reentered the USADA drug-testing pool, meaning he is not eligible to fight until he has completed six months' worth of testing. That put him on track to return at the UFC 300 mega-card set to take place in December, only for UFC CEO Dana White to in insist the fight would not take place until next summer.

But Chandler is confident he will face the Irishman sooner rather than later. “From everything that I’ve been hearing, the first quarter of 2024 is when the [ Conor McGregor] fight will be happening,” he told TMZ. “He can’t run forever."

Chandler himself has not fought for almost 13 months with his last fight also a defeat by Dustin Poirier. And he added: "I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that it has not been a little bit tough. I am very active. I like to be active. When I was in Bellator before the UFC, I wasn’t active enough. I was always scraping and clawing, trying to get fights.

"Now coming in the UFC, I’ve been signed with the organisation for three years now, and having the fights that I’ve had, fight after fight have been a Fight of the Year candidate or Knockouts of the Year. So I went through the ringer. I think a year off, as much as it was tough, has probably been very good for me. Very good for my body. It’s also given me the opportunity for one year to focus on this one opponent."
