Jason Manford has blasted theatregoers who left litter strewn over the floor after his show.

The comedian, who is currently starring in Jack and the Beanstalk at the Manchester Opera House, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to vent his frustrations after walking through the theatre at the end of opening night.

Posting a video of plastic cups, wrappers and popcorn packets, he said: “Just finished our first day of Jack and the Beanstalk here at the beautiful Opera House, but look at the bloody tip people leave.”

Panning the camera down to the floor to show rubbish on every single row, the 42-year-old continued: “Look at this at the end, why do people do this? I even tidy up after the cinema. It’s nuts isn’t it. Every single row. Shocking innit, shocking! Look at this! Unbelievable – you wouldn’t treat your home like that, would you?”

In a message to fans, he added: “Just you know, grab your stuff up at the end. That’s what I do. Maybe it’s because I used to work here, front of house at the cinema. Grab your stuff at the end and take it with you, find a bin. Anyway, it’s just a thought.”

After captioning the post: “What’s your take on litter inside a theatre? Is it audience or staff’s responsibility? What dya reckon?” some of his 460,000 followers were quick to comment underneath, with one saying: “It’s the audience’s responsibility. They should have more respect than to litter like that. They wouldn’t like it if someone went into their house or place of work and left a load of litter.”

Another agreed and wrote: “Why can’t people just do the right thing and take their litter home with them?? Or use a bin nearby??” A third chimed in: “It’s just common courtesy. I always take my rubbish to the bin, I even pick up as much popcorn from the floor as possible if I drop any. I can’t get every little bit, but it’s just polite, surely?”

A fourth fan suggested food and drink be banned from theatres and commented: “People are disgusting. Personally, I’d ban food and drink in theatres and cinemas. It totally ruins the experience for me, listening to people chomping and slurping their way through the performance.”

While a fifth said: “Basic good manners seem to have vanished from all walks of life. Children learn from adults, we can’t blame them if their parents are too lazy to be responsible. Get the giant to have a word during the show?” And a sixth added: “It’s disgusting that people think it’s ok to leave dirt and rubbish for someone else to clear up.”
