The Christmas countdown is on which means it's time to grab a hot chocolate, snuggle up under a cosy blanket and binge watch classic festive films.

One that never fails to give fans wanderlust is The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black. The plot sees LA film editor Amanda (Cameron Diaz) swap homes with Surrey-based journalist Iris (Kate Winslet), as they nurse broken hearts.

The picture-perfect UK village where Amanda ends up always has fans rushing to find The Holiday's filming locations, thanks to its chocolate box homes, quintessential pubs and glorious snow-dusted countryside. The good news? It's not a film set; the scenes were shot on location in the picturesque village of Shere, Surrey.

It's not difficult to see why this idyllic location caught the attention of the producers, with its historic buildings, lush green surroundings, and quiet streets with a handful of boutiques and restaurants. You may recognise the main street from the scene where Amanda attempts to drive in the UK for the first time, while the village's pub, The White Horse, was the setting for when Amanda goes to meet Graham and his friends for a drink.

Meanwhile if you're hoping to enjoy a picturesque walk in the countryside like the characters, you can find gorgeous trails including the footbridge over Tillingbourne Stream which is seen in the film.

Unfortunately if you're thinking you'd also like to head to the fancy countryside stately home where Amanda and Graham enjoy a long lunch and afternoon, you'll have to venture a lot further afield, as this was actually filmed at Greystone Mansion in California!

Still, Shere has everything you could want for a picturesque countryside setting. In fact it's not the first time that Shere has been on Hollywood's radar - it's also been the setting for films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, as well as Bridget Jones.

If you want to visit, the easiest way is to get a train out from London; Chilworth and Gomshall are the nearest stations to Shere and are about an hour and a half's journey from the English capital.

Of course when it comes to staying in the village, you'd be forgiven for wanting to book out Rosehill Cottage, where Amanda spends her UK holiday with its cosy interiors and fireplace. Sadly, the cottage isn't a real place, with both the exterior and interior being sets. Filmmakers were inspired by a real cottage, Honeysuckle Cottage in Holmbury St Mary, but unfortunately this one is private property and doesn't open to the public for stays.

However, that doesn't mean you can't find plenty of equally cosy and warm cottages in the area. Vrbo, Sykes Holiday Cottages and Airbnb can all be great sources for finding idyllic holiday homes whether you're after a winter break or thinking of a summer staycation in the countryside.
