Newcastle are considering signing David de Gea after losing Nick Pope to injury.

Pope, 31, could be out for up to five months after dislocating his shoulder during Newcastle's 1-0 win against Manchester United on Saturday. The goalkeeper's injury leaves Eddie Howe with Martin Dubravka, Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie at his disposal.

Although they are fine deputies, the long-term nature of Pope's injury could force Howe to act in the transfer market. De Gea, who won the Premier League's Golden Glove award last season, has emerged as a possible target for the Champions League side.

De Gea, 33, is still a free agent after leaving Manchester United in July. The Spaniard has trained throughout the last five months and is expected to be ready for action if called upon. Saudi-backed Newcastle would also be able to give him a competitive salary.

As reported by the Daily Mail, De Gea is a realistic option for Newcastle due to his availability and fine pedigree. The title-winner has played more than 400 Premier League games and was named as Manchester United's Player of the Year four times.

It's believed Newcastle are unwilling to match De Gea's £375,000-a-week salary at Old Trafford, although he would still be well paid. It will also be difficult for the experienced star to turn down the chance of being a No.1 goalkeeper in the Premier League again.

De Gea featured in all 38 of Manchester United's Premier League games last season, as well as their Carabao Cup final victory against Newcastle in February. He won eight trophies during his time at Old Trafford, including the FA Cup and Europa League.

De Gea was released by Manchester United after Erik ten Hag secured the £47million of Andre Onana from Inter Milan. Yet the Cameroon international has struggled since leaving Inter Milan for England, conceding 14 goals in just five Champions League games.

There are rumours that Manchester United could re-sign De Gea ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. Onana is expected to be part of Cameroon's squad and could miss several club games. De Gea even posted a cryptic message on X after Saturday's game.

Howe was asked by TNT Sports about Pope's injury after Newcastle's victory. He said: "It will be a massive blow for us if he is ruled out for any length of time. It looked really innocuous, but that is usually the way and they are normally the more serious ones.

"You could see he was in distress and it looked like he dislocated his shoulder just diving. Martin Dubravka came on in a tricky situation with 10 minutes to go with a narrow lead, which is not nice for any goalkeeper, so I have to compliment him for doing so well."
