A crash on the M4 near Bristol Airport has sparked massive traffic chaos with huge queues spanning across the Severn Bridge.

The "serious collision" occurred shortly before 5am this morning, and led to the motorway being shut in both directions after the Prince of Wales Bridge near Almondsbury.

The crash is so serious that authorities don't expect the usually busy motorway to be open "through the morning". The National Highways said in a statement: "A serious collision occurred at approximately 04:44 resulting in a closure of the M4 in both directions after the Prince of Wales Bridge near Almondsbury.

"Avon and Somerset are leading the response to the incident. National Highways resources are in attendance assisting with traffic management. Due to the nature of the incident the road is expected to remain closed through the morning."
