Would you fogging believe it? Newcastle United are the Premier League champions… for swearing.

The Toon Army, whose former player Paul Gascoigne had a 1990 pop hit with Fog on the Tyne, came out on top in a poll to find the most foul-mouthed fans. And it may not come as a surprise after the Magpies were denied a major European win over PSG in Paris on Tuesday following an iffy VAR call.

Researchers found the Geordie side’s supporters swear every 116 words – and Man United fans are not far behind, turning the air blue in every 120 words. And Everton fans are the third most potty-mouthed, uttering at least one swear word per 128 spoken.

Meanwhile, the politest fans follow AFC Bournemouth, delivering an expletive every 209 words. On average, Premier League fans swear once every 160 words. Lifelong Toon fan Niall Hughes, 43, said of the findings: “I’d like to say it’s not true but my mates would absolutely f***ing destroy me for that.”

The plumber, from Newcastle, added: “Passions do run high and the air does turn blue but, howay, man… we’re not that f***ing bad, are we?” The research was carried out by ticketing website ticketgum.com, which looked at the social media activity of Premier League fans.

Spokesman Tulik Vova said: “Newcastle may be flying high on the pitch but it seems its fans still have plenty to be frustrated about because they swear more than any other supporters. Our findings show that whether you are a fan of a successful club or not, you still have plenty to vent about.”
