An icon of fashion and music, Cher has long been open about the drastic surgery she's undergone to enhance her youthful looks.

The If I Could Turn Back Time singer has enjoyed plenty of success since shooting to fame in 1965 as half of folk rock husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher, carving out a name for herself as one of the most unique and versatile solo artists of all time. Nearly 60 years on, and Cher continues to win over fans across generations, and has recently released her very first Christmas album, simply entitled Christmas.

But away from the spotlight, Cher has led a rollercoaster life, enduring a painful split from Sonny Bono, who she shares son Chaz with. She's also undergone years of agonising procedures to maintain her youthful looks. Here, The Mirror takes a look at her surgery secrets, real name and surprising true age...

'Botched' plastic surgery

Cher has previously opened up about the plastic surgery she's undergone to maintain her glam look, with some procedures being more successful than others. As previously reported by the Daily Express, Cher revealed: "I've had my breasts done. But my breast operations were a nightmare. They were really botched in every way. If anything, they were worse after than before." Defending her decision to go under the knife, she added: "It makes me happy. You know, if I want to put my t*** on my back, they're mine."

The megastar credits her age-defying good looks to avoiding alcohol and cigarettes while making sure to eat plenty of 'really good food', but has also been honest about her decision to have a facelift. She quipped: "Yes, I have had a facelift, but who hasn't?"

Astonishing real age

Ahead of the 25th anniversary of her smash-hit dance-pop anthem, Believe, Cher opened up about her feelings on ageing, and many may be astonished to learn that she is in fact 77 years old. Speaking with Today, Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, confessed that she didn't exactly have a brilliant relationship with age, admitting: "No. My mother [model and actress Georgia Holt] didn't mind. But I do. I hate it."

When interviewer Harry Smith shared that he was struggling with turning 70, Cher laughed: "I'd give anything to be 70 again." Opening up about the memoir she's currently writing, Cher continued: "It's very difficult because I've lived too long, and I've done too many things. And so it would have to be, like, an encyclopedia, truthfully."
