Julia Roberts has confessed that one of her most iconic movies was originally supposed to tell a very different story.

The Hollywood star is appearing on Friday's instalment of The Graham Norton Show alongside Timothee Chalamet, Cher, and Tom Hanks and got into conversation about the classic '90s romance Pretty Woman. In the flick Julia, 56, played prostitute Vivian who gets hired by rich playboy Edward - played by Richard Gere - to attend social events with him during a work trip to Beverly Hills.

The pair inevitably end up falling in love - but Julia says the plan was originally for the popular chick flick to have a much darker plot-line and outcome. She said: "It was going to be a much darker film called $3,000 (the price for Vivian to spend the night with Edward).

"Vivian was a drug addict and the movie ended with him leaving her in a side street, throwing the money at her, and driving away. I got that part in that movie and felt really proud, but when the production company folded and the film disappeared I was crushed. But then Disney picked it up, which seemed so unlikely, and made it funny."

Julia previous spoke about the project being initially called 3000 before it became Pretty Woman back in 2019. She told Patricia Arquette as part of Variety's Actors on Actors series that she thought she "had no business being in a movie like that" when she read the initial script.

She added: "There was one producer that stayed with the script and then it went to Disney. And I went, "went to Disney? Are they gonna animate it? How does this become a Disney movie?'" Julia is currently promoting her new Netflix movie Leave The World Behind.

Talking about the film to Graham, she said: "I was sent the book by the director who told me I would love it and to read it as fast as I can, but I just couldn’t because it was scaring me and as soon as it got dark, I had to get away from it. The film is spooky and frightening but so good."

Leave The World Behind saw Julia and her co-stars - incuding Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Bacon - collaborating with Barack and Michelle Obama. She said of the move: "They are brilliant people and great human beings who have made the world a better place so when they said they were interested in collaborating on the film through their production company I was very excited."

The Graham Norton Show airs on BBC One on Friday December 1 at 10.40pm.
