Air fryer fans are grossed out after finding hidden compartment they never clean
A woman struggling to clean an awkward part of her air fryer shared a video of the grimy compartment which prompted some concerning advice from others.
The air fryer is now a hugely popular kitchen appliance, with an estimated one in three households in the UK owning one thanks to the many benefits fans believe it has. It is essentially a portable oven which uses fan technology to rapidly circulate hot air over food in its tray and advocates of it believe it is healthier thanks to using less oil, cheaper than conventional cooking appliances to run and quicker to prepare food in than a conventional oven.
However, every rose has its thorn and one flummoxed woman has taken to TikTok to unashamedly share what her air fryer looks like and to ask for help, writing, "How do you clean the top of an airfryer?".
She shows her device without the drawer in and films the section above where the heating element is located. The outside edges of the casing around the element are covered in brown grime. She takes a piece of kitchen roll and sprays a cleaning product onto it.

Over the top of the video she writes: "Is there a proper way to clean this or should I just pretend I didn't notice?"
'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'
Other users of the site were quick to respond with their own 'advice', which ranged from useful, to amusing and also rather worrying. "Fill the basket ½ way with warm water and lemon juice. Run it until it's steamy and it all just wipes off and smells great," offered one helpful poster.
"I dismantled mine and cleaned each piece during a 3am breakdown," remarked one frustrated air fryer owner. "Clean what? I don't know what you're talking about, I don't see anything," wrote one fan from the 'ignore' school of thought.
"The underside of my air fryer is none of my business," agreed another. "The underside of my air fryer is not my problem, just like the back of my hair is not my business," echoed a third.
However, the downside to leaving the surface covered in oil and cooking debris was highlighted when one posted: "mine caught on fire, cleaned herself." The same had happened to another user of the site: "Thank god, everyone always makes fun of me for having caught mine on fire," they wrote.
"Same lmfaooo. I was so sad though," said a third. "Mine did too and I’m still skeptical about using the replacement they sent me," replied a fourth.
Others suggested the style of fryer was the problem: "I got a ninja fryer so don't gotta worry about this," wrote one. "This is meant for consumers to change a new one every 2 years," agreed someone else. "Buy a Ninja Air Fryer with ceramic coating. Easy to clean and no Teflon."
While there were those that were exhausted with having something else to scrub: "lorddd not again," they wrote. "how yall come up with more things to clean." "I didn't want to notice," answered someone else, "but I touched it once trying to move it."
