Ed Sheeran has emerged as the favourite to sing the next James Bond theme, according to a survey.

The British singer-songwriter bagged a quarter of the vote (24 per cent), beating Lewis Capaldi into a close second on 20 per cent, while 19 per cent wanted Adele to return.

According to clothing brand N.Peal, outside bets from the 2,000 surveyed included Elton John (14 per cent) to sing the 007 theme, Harry Styles (13 per cent), Beyoncé and Lana Del Rey (12 per cent), plus Dua Lipa and Arctic Monkeys (10 per cent).

The popularity of Ed Sheeran comes as little surprise, with a string of megahits to his name including Thinking Out Loud, Shape of You, Perfect and The A Team. Racking up more than 150 million records sold worldwide, he's one of the best-selling music artists in history - and doubtlessly a big draw for Bond-makers Eon.

A talented and versatile artist known for his soulful voice and uncanny knack of penning emotionally resonant songs, Ed could be just the ticket for a franchise keen to take a whole new direction following Daniel Craig's departure in 2021. While traditionally the Bond themes have often been sung by artists with powerful, dramatic voices, contemporary outings have pushed the boat out a bit further.

In recent years, artists with diverse styles have been picked for the title song, such as Sam Smith's Writing's On The Wall from Spectre or Billie Eilish's No Time To Die . As such, it isn't a leap as big as you might think to bring Ed Sheeran into the fold. While he leans more towards pop and acoustic genres, Ed could well bring a fresh and contemporary feel to the Bond theme. However, the decision ultimately hangs on the precise tone the Bond filmmakers are looking for.

With the franchise traditionally relying on a dramatic and cinematic quality, this is something that could appeal to Lewis Capaldi. His unique and highly distinctive voice can certainly convey deep emotion, which could bring a compelling clout to a Bond theme.

In third place was Adele, who of course wowed us all with her stunning Skyfall more than a decade ago. Adele is surely one of the greatest modern female singers, if not the greatest. And her breathtakingly soulful voice effortlessly carried such a heavyweight song as if it was no more than a child’s lullaby. With its rich and confident delivery, audiences were left shaken and very much stirred by this track back in 2012. And there's a chance lightning could strike twice if given the opportunity to sing on the new film.

The survey also found that Tom Hardy was top choice to assume the role of 007, landing 37 per cent of the vote, with James Norton in second with 31 per cent.

Thirty-one per cent wanted Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) to direct, with Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and Greta Gerwig (Barbie) following with 28 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. A female Bond, however, still remains controversial - with 44 per cent saying they’d be unhappy with the decision.

In terms of style, an enormous 65 per cent wanted Bond movies to return to standalone adventures, and the biggest threat Brits would like Bond to tackle in the next film include the rise of Artificial Intelligence with 51 per cent.
