If there was any single product that symbolised the cost of living crisis it would be, possibly second only to air fryers, the Oodie. The much-imitated but for my money never-bettered hooded blanket has become iconic over the last few years, perfect for keeping warm while working from home or snuggling on the sofa of an evening watching TV.

I am a huge fan of my Oodie. Inspired by Martin Lewis ' advice to 'heat the person not the home,' I bought myself a plush blue one to help combat the urge to turn the heating on during the day when I was home alone and, despite its premium price tag, I found it worth every penny. It's firmly back in rotation for the autumn and winter months for 2023, and I have already cracked and bought Disney themed festive Oodies in the brand's Black Friday sale to add a bit of Christmas cheer to the grey winter.

But in terms of cost-per-wear, I would argue that Oodie's best-value product is actually one that many shoppers haven't yet cottoned on to. Launched earlier this year with little fanfare, Oodie has released Sleep Tees, huge comfortable and similiarly shaped versions of their plush wintry staples, but made in a bamboo cotton blend that makes for frankly game-changing sleepwear.

As a Disney fan, I got a cute blue tie dyed Stitch Sleep Oodie a few weeks ago and it is now, perhaps to my husband's sadness, my favourite thing to sleep in. What's more, while the recommended retail price is an eye-watering £74, Oodie has reduced all their sleep tees as part of their Black Friday sale, making it the perfect time to try one out.

The first time sleep Oodies really popped up on my radar was earlier in the year during the heatwave. As we all struggled to sleep in soaring temperatures (remember that?!) I was desperately looking for something, anything, that would be cool enough to sleep comfortably.

Initially when I saw the sleep tees mentioned I dismissed them as an attempt by the Aussie brand to diversify into other products as, I assumed, they must be reaching saturation point, with everyone in the UK having bought either an original Oodie or one of the many dupes now available.

But over a few days I saw people on Facebook waxing lyrical about the sleep Oodies. In reviews, some women said they were the only sleepwear to give them respite from their menopausal hot flushes, meanwhile some happy customers even said they were cooler than sleeping naked. I was tempted, but at the time with the prices high I didn't take the plunge, wondering how I could justify spending that on what I still had suspicions was a nightshirt with delusions of grandeur.

Little did I know. If nightshirts can be magic then the Oodie Sleep tee is absolutely that.

The joy of the sleep Oodie comes from the fact that the bamboo fibres allow a kind of temperature regulation I hadn't really considered in sleepwear before. I have bamboo wicking workout gear but never really considered that the thermo-regulating properties that cool me down while exercising also makes it the perfect fabric for nightwear, helping keep you cool in summer but warm in winter.

My Stitch Sleep Oodie is generously sized but thanks to the weight of the fabric hangs really nicely and comfortably so, despite it being baggy I don't end up tangled in it in bed as I sleep, no matter how much I move around.

The shape and size will be familiar to anyone who has worn one of the brand's fleecy versions, although the kangaroo style pocket is replaced with two generous side pockets instead. It's comfortable, the perfect length for lounging around in and basically the best nightshirt I've ever owned.

The bamboo fibres make it perfect for changing temperatures in your bedroom. Previously I've gone to bed cosy because we've had a blast of heating just before bedtime but then woken in the night freezing as the temperature has dropped and my PJs aren't warm enough. The bamboo cotton allows your body to adjust as the heat in the room dissipates, meaning I'm sleeping through and remaining cosy until morning.

.It may not be the most alluring of nightwear options - my husband has already described it as both a tent and a sack and, with the Oodie one-size-fits-most ethos, it does make me look like I'm drowning somewhat when I wear it. But simply, I don't care - the sleep tee has given me some great nights' sleep already and I've already decided it's time to pick up a planetary print version so I have two to alternate. While its usual RRP is definitely pricey, if you can get it on sale so it's a similar price to other quality sleepwear it's absolutely worth spending the money on, not least because it will last me year-round and, unlike the traditional Oodie, won't need to be put in the cupboard come spring when the weather gets warmer.

Having made the discovery of the magical properties of bamboo for sleepwear, I turned to Google to see if anything similar was available, perhaps at a more budget friendly price point.

Bamboo nightwear is definitely on trend and there are some premium brands that are offering PJs in the fabric. But suddenly full price sleep tees are looking more reasonable, with Cozy Earth's posh PJs coming in at around £100 a pair. A slightly more budget friendly option is offered by Pretty You London and, if you're looking for something that is going to make your other half less likely to recoil in horror at you going to bed in a (delightfully) comfy tent, it's definitely a solid option.

The main down side to the Sleep Oodies is definitely the high initial price for them, which is reduced considerably by the Black Friday megasale. Interestingly, while there are plenty of other retailers now selling their own Oodie-style hooded blankets this winter, including John Lewis’ sherpa-lined fleece hooded blanket, which comes in grey, black, blue, pink, purple and cream for £40 and Dunelm whose Oversized Teddy Blanket Hoodie is £16, so far as I can see no-one yet has replicated the bamboo sleep tees in this kind of style.

So for now at least if you want to upgrade your sleepwear year round, Oodie is the only game in town and, if you want to sleep well no matter the temperature fluctuation in your bedroom, in my opinion it's also the best one.
