The British public can "see right through" Nigel Farage and his I'm A Celebrity tactics, according to a former ITV star who says the politician "shouldn't be in the jungle".

Farage admitted his disappointment after missing out on a Bush Tucker Trial earlier this week as he settles into camp life on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! The GB News presenter told co-star Grace Dent he was gutted to be missing out on "25 per cent of airtime" after the public voted for Nella Rose to do 'No Time To Cry'.

But now former I'm A Celeb runner-up Jake Quickenden tells The Mirror that the public can't be fooled, suggesting Farage's quip was all part of a tactical move. Speaking exclusively to us after the former UKIP leader's cocky comments aired, the 2014 show star said it could well be a "really good ploy to not get any more trials".

Jake explained: "So either it's a really good ploy to not get any trials. Or he was just being honest and he did want to airtime. But I guess Farage has gone in there to try to change people's perspective on him. So, admitting that you want a bit of airtime, I guess that's what they're all in there for, they all probably want a bit of airtime."

Revealing similar feelings during his stint in the jungle, the former X Factor star added: "There's always a point where you go 'I kind of wanted to do that trial because I haven't really done anything'. But, to admit that on day three is a bit weird."

"I think he's in there to try and try and change people's views on them. So, the more airtime he gets there's more of a chance of that happening. But I think the general public will kind of see through it and go, 'Well, we're not going to vote you to do anything else now, we don't want to see you'. So I think he's just knackered himself."

Last year we saw disgraced MP Matt Hancock enter the jungle, finishing as a runner-up after losing out to Lioness Jill Scott. There's ongoing criticism surrounding politicians taking part in reality TV, something Jake tells us he agrees with.

"It's a hard one because I always like to give people the benefit of the doubt. And I think everyone kind of deserves a chance for people to see the true you. I don't know anything about politics, I know that it's got to be a hard job. But there are certain things that politicians say that I don't agree with and there's been a lot that I didn't agree with Nigel Farage and with Matt Hancock. If I'm perfectly honest, I don't think they should go in there.

"I think they should stick to politics, I think they should stick to what they know, even though sometimes they seem like they don't know anything. They should kind of stick to that. But it draws people's attention, it gets people talking, and I can see why it's done. Matt Hancock managed to get a lot of people on his side, so it might be the same for Farage, but will soon see, I think it's quite early days at the minute. And I'm just kind of excited to keep watching and keep seeing how he comes across."

Farage's time in the jungle hasn't exactly been smooth sailing and only last night viewers praised Nella after she confronted him over his anti-immigration views. She asked him "Why don't black people like you?". It's not the first time Farage has been quizzed by his fellow campmates, only minutes into Sunday's launch This Morning's Josie Gibson made a Brexit jibe, while First Dates star Fred Sirieix questioned his election tactics in another episode.

But it was Nella's turn last night and she certainly wasn't going down without a fight. "You want us gone, that's all I understood," Nella told Farage after admitting she didn't know much about the former UKIP leader. She added: "Let's get everything out in the open. All the tea is coming out now… apparently, you're anti-immigrants?"

Nigel replied: "Who told you that?" Nella said: "The internet." Nigel added: "Oh, well there we are then it must be true." Adding further fuel to the fire, Nella probed: "It must be! OK, but then why don't black people like you?" Nigel replied: "You’d be amazed, they do. If you came with me through South London, you'd be astonished." Nella reacted: "Nigel! Nigel! So everyone hates you for no reason? Not that everyone hates you, that was so bad. Sorry."

Nigel insisted he was misunderstood. He added: "You can disagree with somebody, but to chuck around accusations the way they've been chucked around is grossly unfair. Anti-immigrant, right? No, no, all I've said is we cannot go on with the numbers coming to Britain that are coming." Nella clapped back: "I'm one of the numbers?" Nigel responded: "So that’s it then, should it be 5 million a year, 10 million… you don’t seem to understand."

Nella said: "Those immigrants that are coming in, I came in." Nigel insisted: "Hang on! Think!" Nella asked: "What is so wrong about immigrants?" Nigel said: "Listen. Since 2000, the British population has increased by 10 million. 10 million." Nella said: "Good thing, right?" Nigel replied: "Good thing, unless you want a GP appointment…"
