How a visit to your Post Office can help tackle poverty this winter

You can help vulnerable people this winter with a Post Office visit

As temperatures drop and the need for food banks this winter is forecast to go up.

This is often the hardest time of year for people on low incomes, and the shocking reality is that some will face the impossible decision of heating vs eating over the coming months.

However, there are ways to help support people facing hardship. You could even make a difference with your very next Post Office visit.

Between November 6 and March 31, for every over-the-counter cash withdrawal at Post Office, it will give 1p to the Trussell Trust to help tackle poverty and hunger.

Last year’s successful campaign raised nearly £340k and helped food banks in the Trussell Trust's network of over 1,300 food bank centres expand their services to include debt and housing advice, counselling and other wrap-around support.

These funds supported the Trussell Trust food banks which gave out close to three million food supplies to people in crisis between 1 April 2022 to 31st March 2023.

It’s vital support at such a difficult time of year for many families. The Trussell Trust expects one million emergency food parcels to be distributed across its food bank network this winter, the most parcels ever provided across this period. This is an average of one food parcel being distributed every eight seconds.

It has also helped schemes such as Ten Tiny Toes, launched by Bangor Northern Ireland Foodbank, which supplies essential items to new parents struggling to provide for their babies.

This year Post Office wants to raise over £360k - taking the total amount raised to over £1 million in three years, and helping make even more of a difference to the lives of people in communities like yours who can't afford the essentials.

Customers of up to 30 banks and building societies can withdraw cash over the counter at the Post Office and just by using this service, they will be supporting the Trussell Trust.

Over 100 branches also provide food collection points to donate items for the Trussell Trust.

With Post Office’s network size, heart of the community locations and existing links with Trussell Trust, they are uniquely placed to help people navigate these challenging times.

"Our third annual partnership with the Trussell Trust comes as they face a winter where need is expected to be higher than ever before. By withdrawing cash at Post Office, people will be helping them to keep the doors of foodbanks open for people who need support.”
