Ten Hag changes his mind on McTominay after Man Utd star answers his demand

It looked like Scott McTominay's time at Manchester United was up in the summer, but the midfielder has been worth his weight in gold to Erik ten Hag in recent weeks.

The Scotland international was the subject of transfer interest from West Ham in the transfer window and had a £30million bid for his services knocked back. But with McTominay ending the 2022/23 campaign as a peripheral figure in Ten Hag's squad, it's understood United were open to selling him during the off-season.

Fast forward three months and McTominay is unlikely to be up for grabs in January after stepping up with a flurry of crucial goals for both club and country.

McTominay has always enjoyed a more influential role for Scotland but has taken his game to another level to inspire his nation to qualification for next summer's European championships after plundering seven goals in eight Euro 2024 qualifiers in a more advanced role.

And the United academy graduate has carried that form into the Premier League, too. McTominay forced himself into Ten Hag's plans after scoring twice in just three minutes to complete a late turnaround against Brentford last month - a result that significantly eased the pressure on the Old Trafford chief.

McTominay has started all but one of United's six fixtures since that match and is now seen as an important player by Ten Hag, who is unwilling to entertain the idea of selling him in January, per a recent report from The Star.

Ten Hag's chance of stance comes after McTominay revealed he had been challenged to improve his goalscoring output as well as develop other elements of his game by Ten Hag during a supporter Q&A session last December.

"I should score more goals," McTominay admitted at the event. "The manager has actually spoken to me about that and shown me little clips and little ways I can be more effective in the game: making assists, scoring goals.

"If you do certain little details, then you can get yourself in those positions more often. I know that I can do it. I’ve always liked to fancy myself that I can score goals and stuff like that, so it’s important I keep practising.

"Whenever the manager speaks to you, you’ve obviously got to listen and take it all on board. It’s really good information that he’s giving you. He’s like that with a lot of players, where he’ll sit them down and speak through clips of games, saying, 'Doing this, how you can influence this.' Loads of fine little details that can help players and obviously give them confidence, putting his time into us, personally and not just in a group scenario."
