In an interview with The Guardian, Eric recalled the start of their relationship and said: "I met my wife, Janet, in 1994 on the set of a TV series. She was the assistant director. I was just coming out of a relationship, and not to be trusted," he continued: "At first she wasn't too keen. She knew actors are a lot of work: it would be like taking your work home with you. But I managed to convince her. We had a secret affair the first season. I mean, dating crew! Actually, it was much worse for her, because she wasn't supposed to give any of the actors preferential treatment."

Eric admitted the scandalous fling was filled with "danger" and intrigue, something that both of them found to be very fun and exciting. After keeping their love under wraps for some time, they were finally able to go public after Janet moved on the series. After just five months of Eric landing his groundbreaking role on Will and Grace the pair wed in beautiful ceremony in August of 1997. The star said that their love is what has kept him down-to-earth all of these years, and later admitted to New Idea: "My marriage saved me."
