Thanksgiving storms will hit hardest in nine US states with snow and torrential rain forecasted.

Thanksgiving this year is set to be the busiest on record - but the weather could be restricting some people's travel plans over the start of the holiday season.

A major storm over the eastern US is likely to affect some travel plans as it releases snow and rain. Delays to flights are commonplace at this time of year, while travelling people also clog up roads and public transport. The Los Angeles Times once called the annual build-up on the 405 Freeway a "symbol of America's holiday travel mayhem."

Over 50 million people are projected to go at least 50 miles from their home, according to the American Automobile Association and one of the busiest days is expected today ahead of Thanksgiving tomorrow.

So what areas are expected to be affected worse?

New York

Strong winds continue on Tuesday in New York and bad weather is expected to continue into today The National Weather Service (NWS) said: "A strong frontal system impacts the area tonight through Wednesday afternoon. A Wind Advisory is now in effect for E. Suffolk County with gusts up to 50mph. Coastal flood advisories and statements are in effect for the entire coastline."

Wyoming

The NWS's winter storm watch is in effect in Wyoming until Friday morning. Wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour and snow of between six and 12 inches will fall.

Travel could be "very difficult" late into the Thanksgiving afternoon and evening. "The heaviest snow and strongest wind is likely to occur between 3 PM Thanksgiving and sunrise Friday," the NWS said.

Michigan

The start of a cold front is expected after a "partial clearing" today with temperatures a little above freezing. NWS Detroit / Pontiac Michigan said: "Cloudy skies this morning will give way to partial clearing later in the day with temperatures in the lower to mid-40s. Partly cloudy skies are expected Thursday with highs in the mid to upper 40s.

" A cold front will then bring temperatures down into the 30s on Friday under mostly sunny skies."

Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont

A storm system was expected to move from the southern Plains to the Northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday. Parts of Maine, Vermont and northern New Hampshire are expected to get 3 to 7 inches (7 to 17cm) of snow between Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Rain is forecast for most of today with up to two inches in some areas Thanksgiving is expected to be sunny generally.

"Plenty of snow and ice" is currently nestling in Vermont, but the NWS has indicated temperatures are likely to warm up little with some areas expecting above freezing. NWS Burlington said yesterday: "We've got plenty of snow and ice across the region right now, but temperatures are expected to warm up tomorrow morning, with many areas outside eastern Vermont likely above freezing."

Untreated road surfaces will continue to be icy this morning even where snow and freezing rain have transitioned to rain. Winds gusting as high as 25 mph."
