Fans of The Karate Kid films are in for a treat as Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio are teaming up for a new instalment of the martial arts franchise.

The actors are set to reprise their roles in Sony Pictures’ latest Karate Kid film. Ralph, 62, starred in the original 1984 film as Mr Miyagi's student Daniel LaRusso. In the 2010 remake, 69-year-old Jackie played kung fu expert Mr Han.

The production team are now on the lookout for a Chinese actor to play the title character in the new movie, with Jackie and Ralph releasing a video to announce the casting search. At the start of the clip, Jackie said: "Hi everyone, we've got big news!"

Ralph explained: "We're starring in a new Karate Kid movie together." Jackie said: "That's big news, but we even have bigger news." Ralph seemed confused as he asked: "Bigger than that?"

An excited Jackie said: "We're looking for next Karate Kid." Ralph added: "That's right, the global search for the star of our new film starts right now so let's wax on wax off everybody," referencing a famous line from the original film.

Jackie then made a reference to his own Karate Kid film as he said: "You mean jacket on, jacket off, hang it up?" Ralph suggested: "Maybe the new Karate Kid will have to do it all." The actors then both said they are "very excited" for the project.

Jonathan Entwistle, who worked on hit shows such as I'm Not Okay with This and The End of the F***ing World, is directing the currently untitled feature film. The script has been written by Rob Lieber, who previously worked with Sony on Peter Rabbit. The film is being produced by Karen Rosenfelt and has been slated for a December 13 release date next year.

While not much is known about the script for the new film, it has been revealed that the movie will bring the story to the East Coast. The production will focus on a teenager from China who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor.

The first Karate Kid movie was released in 1984 and it was an instant classic. It followed Ralph's character Daniel after he moved to a new town where he was harassed by some boys who mastered karate. Daniel then found his own training master in Mr Miyagi, an apartment handyman who turned out to be proficient in karate.

The original film was followed by three sequels. The franchise saw a resurgence in recent years thanks to Netflix's Cobra Kai. Sony revived The Karate Kid in 2010 with a remake starring Jayden Smith.
