The gunman who shot innocent Elle Edwards as she partied on Christmas Eve is thought to have laid in wait for an hour before the horror attack.

A mystery killer shot an estimated 12 bullets at crowds outside the Lighthouse Pub in Wallasey, Merseyside, killing Elle and injuring four others 10 minutes before Christmas Day.

The 26-year-old beautician, who was shot in the head, was not the gunman's intended target, police have confirmed.

But detectives at Merseyside Police are still hunting for the gun, believed to be a semi automatic, and a black Mercedes which the attacker is thought to have used to flee the scene.

A source with knowledge of the incident said Elle was standing outside the front entrance near the other victims when the gunman began shooting.

She was hit in the back of the head and collapsed unconscious, while the other victims managed to retreat inside the pub before the gunman drove away.

It is understood that the gunman waited in the black Mercedes for around an hour in the Lighthouse car park before opening fire.

Detective Superintendent Sue Coombs appealed for any information about the suspected getaway car.

She said: “Particularly, we want information about the whereabouts of a dark-coloured Mercedes that was in the Lighthouse public house car park before the incident.

“We want to know where it came from and where it’s gone since then.”

So far two men, aged 30 and 31, and a 19-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with Elle's murder.

The 30-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, was released under investigation and recalled to prison for breaching his licence.

The other two suspects, both arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, have since been bailed pending further enquiries.

On Tuesday detectives thanked the public after they received nearly 150 pieces of intelligence, including tip offs about certain "individuals and wider tensions".

The force has faced questions about whether the incident could be linked to gangland rivalries which have already claimed the lives of four other people in Merseyside since August.

Three of those have been innocent women, including nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel and Ashley Dale, 28, who were both shot dead in their own homes.

Elle's dad, Tim Edwards fought back tears as he shared a tribute to his daughter calling her "the most beautiful and bright star out there".

He said: "There was no one as beautiful as our Elle May, her looks, her laugh and the way she would light up a room as soon as she walked in.

"She had this way about her that as soon as you met her you just instantly fell in love with her, everyone that met Elle knew how special she was.

"Her laugh was infectious. Anyone who was around her had a good time, she loved her life and had so many amazing plans for the future.

"She was only just getting started. Christmas and our family will never be the same again without her. She was the glue that held this big family together."
