Edwin van der Sar has brutally told Altay Bayindir that Andre Onana is his "favourite" Manchester United goalkeeper, despite being called a "legend" by the Red Devils' second-choice stopper.

Bayindir, 25, arrived at Old Trafford from Fenerbahce for £4.3million on September 1 as Erik ten Hag bolstered his goalkeeping department. However, the Turkey international is yet to make an appearance for United, with fellow summer signing Onana starting in every competitive game so far this season.

In a video on United's Instagram account, Bayindir named Van der Sar as his top goalkeeper and branded the Dutchman as a "legend". During his illustrious time at United, Van der Sar won four Premier League titles, the Champions League and two League Cups among other trophies.

"When I was younger, I watched a lot of Manchester United games," Bayindir said. "My favourite goalkeeper, I say this and Edwin van der Sar is a legend. I know him."

Van der Sar appeared in the comments section on Instagram and offered a brutal response to the United goalkeeper. He said: "Hi Altay, will see you soon in Manchester and we will have a chat about goalkeeping but my favourite is still Andre as you will know!" The Dutchman has loyalties to Onana, having worked with the stopper during their time together at Ajax.

After a difficult start to life at United, Onana has come into form of late. The 27-year-old joined the club for £47m from Inter Milan in July following the departure of David de Gea and conceded 14 goals in his first six matches, including four against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

However, Onana has kept five clean sheets in his last 12 appearances and helped secure all three points against Copenhagen at home with a stoppage-time penalty save last month. "But then it was a brilliant save from Andre," Ten Hag said of Onana to TNT Sports.

"He has shown personality, he knows the levels, he has shown before what his skills are. He did not match his skills but I think Saturday was a very good performance and today as well. Also don't forget his save after half-time on the counter-attack. And one of his skills is that he is a very good penalty saver."

As for Bayindir, Ten Hag explained why he didn't feature in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace back in September, after Tom Heaton and Martin Dubravka were both used in the early rounds of that competition last season.

"You will see [if Bayindir gets a chance to play soon], but we chose against Crystal Palace in the League Cup to play Andre because both came new in and both have to adapt to the English standard," Ten Hag said.

"So that's why we preferred Andre to play in that game. It's important for him to use every game in this moment, but yeah, we also have to progress Altay, that's clear. He makes a very good impression in training, he's really developing, progressing. So we're very happy with that and we are convinced we have the two right goalkeepers in our squad to do the job for us."
