A man in a nursing home is facing a first-degree murder charge after allegedly killing a fellow resident over a row about the use of a washing machine.

The man is said to have punched his victim in the head, despite a member of staff trying to come in between the two. The spat has resulted in William Paschall, 71, being charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a person 60 years of age or older. The Joliet nursing home resident is said to have entered into the altercation over a washing machine, police said.

Officers rushed to the Salem Village Nursing and Rehabilitation at 1314 Rowell Avenue , just outside Milwaukee, at about 9:25pm and found an unresponsive 61-year-old man in a laundry room. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Cops said Paschall attacked the victim after becoming enraged about the way the victim was using a washing machine.

A staff member attempted to intervene and police said Paschall punched the victim in the head and then used his walking frame. Staff called 911 and Paschall was taken into custody, police said.

The killing came after a man aged 95 was arrested at his nursing home over the death of his neighbour – after bashing the victim's head with his walking frame. The frame-wielding resident attacked his 88-year-old victim in his bedroom at the home in Sanguesa, northern Spain, a regional government official said.

The victim of the attack died later in hospital. Neither man has been identified. The official added: “Police arrested the attacker, who according to two witnesses appeared to have used his metal walking frame in the attack, striking him in the head."

And Joan Hobbs, 89, was the victim of a vicious beating at the hands of a male resident, 86, of the IRT Thomas Holt Aged Care Centre in Sydney's southern suburb of Kirrawee. The man, who suffered the same debilitating condition, entered her room before carrying out the brutal attack, leaving her with severe injuries, including bruises all over her face and her arm "shattered all the way down".
