'Hamas tunnels beneath Gaza hospital' shown in video released by Israeli forces

The Israeli military has released a video of what they claim is the entrance to a vast Hamas tunnel network deep below the largest hospital in Gaza.

The IDF's clip, which was taken with a remote camera, shows a staircase spiralling 30ft down into the ground before leading to a huge 180ft tunnel, which has been "fortified" against attacks. The Israelis claim the discovery proves the allegations they have maintained since the conflict began - that Hamas has built a sprawling headquarters under the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City from which it launches its attacks against Israel.

The IDF and the Israel Security Agency say they also have "proof" of Israeli hostages being taken to the hospital after Hamas carried out its brutal massacre on October 7. In another video clip, Hamas militants are seen transporting a Nepali and Thai civilian after they were snatched from Israel. One is seen injured, lying on a hospital bed, while the other is seen walking close by. Also, a number of IDF vehicles stolen during the operation were seen within the confines of the hospital. According to the IDF, these snippets of information prove without a doubt that Hamas has been using the hospital as a cover for their activities.

The video of the tunnels shows a deep staircase spiralling down to the entrance of another shaft around 30ft below ground. It's been bolstered with a number of fortifications, including a blast-proof door and a firing hole, it is reported. "This type of door is used by the Hamas terrorist organisation to block Israeli forces from entering the command centres and the underground assets belonging to Hamas," the IDF said.

The military discovered the tunnel shaft under a shed which contained a small arsenal of several different weapons, including RPGs, explosives and AK-47 rifles, the militants' firearm of choice. Earlier in the week, the IDF showed cabinets filled with weaponry in the hospital itself, claiming that militants were arming themselves in the facility.

Benjamin Netanyahu's advisor, Mark Regev, added that the IDF had also found a Hamas command and control room at the hospital. He said: "Once again we have to show - and we still will, it’s just a matter of time - the connection between the tunnel network and the hospital." He added that the military had to be prepared as there were suspicions that the underground tunnels would be lined with booby traps. He said the IDF will have conclusive proof within a couple of days. .
