'Rishi Sunak has wasted £140m which could have gone on tackling smuggler gangs'
The Government’s plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda was immoral, misguided and impractical.
The Supreme Court ruled it was also unlawful, leaving Rishi Sunak’s flagship policy in tatters. The PM has wasted £140million which could have been spent on tackling the gangs which exploit people fleeing war and oppression.
Or it could have been spent on clearing the backlog of asylum cases, which costs millions of pounds a day in accommodation costs. Instead the Conservatives pressed ahead with an ineffective gimmick, in the misguided belief it would play well with voters.
The public want an immigration system that is fair and compassionate. And they want a Government that is competent and respects the law. At the moment they have neither. The Prime Minister is now promising to use emergency legislation to revamp the scheme in the hope it will comply with the courts. It is a perfect example of insanity – doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.
Inflated claim
The fall in inflation offers some relief to families buffeted by the living costs crisis. Rishi Sunak has shamelessly tried to claim the drop is due to his policies rather than the Bank of England raising interest rates and an unexpected ease in energy bills.

But the PM’s crowing is ill-placed when so many people are still feeling the pinch and prices for food and clothing have soared. The economy will only have turned a corner when people are not having to choose between heating and eating, and don’t have to rely on foodbanks to put food on the table.
