They might be two of the most famous and recognisable people on the planet, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's relationship had a pretty relatable beginning, with Prince Harry simply coming across Meghan by chance on a mutual friend's Instagram.

Social media is, these days, the way a lot of people start relationships, even if most people don't then go on to have a televised royal wedding or a love story worthy of a Netflix series.

As Prince Harry tells it in his tell-all memoir Spare, he immediately asked their mutual friend who Meghan was. Once their friend had connected them, Meghan only had to send a simple three-word message - he was instantly hooked.

In Spare, Harry describes the first time he saw Meghan in his friend's Instagram story vividly, "they were playing with a new app that put silly filters on your photos. Violet and the woman had dog ears, dog noses, long red dog tongues hanging out. Despite the canine cartoon overlay, I sat up straighter. This woman with Violet...my God. I watched the video several times, then forced myself to put down the phone."

Despite Harry's attempt at self-control, he was so struck by Meghan, that he immediately "picked it up again, and watched the video again."

Harry then went on to describe how he had "never seen anyone so beautiful" and that "there was an energy about her, a wild joy and playfulness. There was something in the way she smiled, the way she interacted with Violet, the way she gazed into the camera. Confident. Free."

By his own admission, Harry "got all of that from her face" before asking for his friend to put them in touch, to which he said Violet responded, "Yeah, I've had six other guys ask me." Despite the competition he was facing, Meghan quickly got in touch and sent him a simple three-word message saying hello and complimenting him on the "beautiful photographs" on his own page.

His Instagram, he wrote in the memoir, was "mostly photos of Africa" where he described in many chapters experiencing a sense of freedom and peacefulness that was unavailable to him in the UK, where he lived in such a bright spotlight.

Harry, who like anyone who has hoped someone will slide into their DMs, had done his own research on Meghan's page, so he knew she had spent time in Africa too because he had "seen photos of her hanging out with gorillas in Rwanda." Quickly, the two bonded over their experiences and memories of spending time in the continent, and the rest, as they say, is history. Meghan's opener may have been a simple one, but the smooth message paved the way for their journey together.
