The hotly anticipated game show based on Netflix’s Squid Game is just days away from launch. Squid Game: The Challenge will see hundreds of everyday people taking part in a real-life version of the deadly game from the hit Korean drama in a bid for a life-changing multi-million dollar prize.

The 10-episode series was filmed here in the UK, with sets built to replicate those from the show down to the most minute details. But while the stakes in Squid Game: The Challenge aren’t as high, a huge cash-filled piggy bank hanging over the contestants’ living quarters cranks up the intensity as players compete for what Netflix says is the largest cash prize in reality TV history.

But only one person can walk away with the jackpot. As the dog-eat-dog series progresses, the contestants will be forced to show their true colours as new alliances are shattered and friends become enemies.

“I’m going to be your best friend, but I will absolutely double-cross you,” one contestant says in the show’s trailer.

What is Squid Game: The Challenge about?

The reality series will see 456 real players enter the competition show in pursuit of a life-changing reward of $4.56 million. As they compete through a series of games inspired by the original show – alongside some surprising new additions – their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.

What games will be in Squid Game: The Challenge?

The series will see players living in the same bunk-bed style quarters as seen in Squid Game while facing real-life versions of the show’s deadly games. The trailer teases fans with a less-violent version of Red Light, Green Light, complete with the game’s creepy animatronic doll, Young-hee.

Netflix is yet to confirm exactly which games will be recreated in The Challenge, but the trailer shows players taking part in Squid Game’s ruthless marble game, the nail-biting glass stepping stones, Ppopgi – in which each player must extract a shape from a honeycomb candy that forms either a circle, triangle, star or an umbrella – and a life-sized version of Battleship.

When is Squid Game: The Challenge released?

Squid Game: The Challenge will drop on Wednesday, November 22 at 8am. It will be available to stream with a subscription to Netflix, which usually costs £10.99 a month for the streamer’s standard plan and gives access to hit shows like the upcoming sixth season of The Crown.

But shoppers can currently get Netflix for free with a bargain Black Friday deal from Sky that also includes Apple TV+ for less than £20.
