It was a poignant day at Manchester United with the funeral of one of their greatest ever players, Sir Bobby Charlton.

Huge crowds lined the streets and gathered around Old Trafford to pay their respects ahead of the service at Manchester Cathedral. Many fans held up United scarves and wore club colours, while others held up signs bearing personal tributes.

Meanwhile, the international break has left manager Erik ten Hag with plenty to contemplate after the 1-0 win over Luton on Saturday. The Red Devils are now up to sixth in the Premier League, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's 25 percent stake in the club set to be confirmed this week.

More than 1,000 guests attended the service. They included Sir Alex Ferguson and surviving members of Matt Busby's 1968 European Cup-winning team. Following the funeral, BBC presenter Gary Lineker told reporters it was "a privilege" to be there.

Also present were England manager Gareth Southgate and a clutch of former Red Devils stars including Steve Bruce, Paul Scholes, Andy Cole and Bryan Robson. Outside Old Trafford, the cortège passed through a guard of honour made up of representatives of United’s Under-18 and Under-21 Academy teams, before proceeding to the cathedral.

Erik ten Hag misses funeral

One person not at the funeral was Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag had an “unbreakable and longstanding personal commitment in the Netherlands," according to the club, which prevented him from attending the service. After being in the dugout for the Luton game on Saturday, he travelled back to his native country the following day.

It wasn't just Ten Hag who was absent though. The club's American owners, the Glazer family, were also not present following discussions with senior club officials. The US owners feared abuse from fans might overshadow the occasion.

United's injury crisis worsens

Manchester United’s injury concerns have deepened as the final international break of the year gets underway after Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund both withdrew from the Denmark squad.

Midfielder Eriksen and young striker Hojlund were both substituted during Saturday’s narrow win against Luton Town at Old Trafford. And they have pulled out of the final set of Euro 2024 qualifiers against Slovenia and Northern Ireland with the Danes still not guaranteed of their spot at next summer’s tournament.

Eriksen was taken off approaching half-time against Luton because of a knee problem, while Hojlund limped off late on clutching a hamstring. Immediately after the match United head coach Ten Hag was unable to provide any clarity around the severity of their respective injuries.
