David Cameron has returned to Government as Foreign Secretary as Rishi Sunak conducts a Cabinet reshuffle. The ministerial switcharound was prompted by Mr Sunak's decision to finally sack Suella Braverman as Home Secretary.

The Conservatives said the Prime Minister is carrying out a wider reshuffle which "strengthens his team in Government to deliver long-term decisions for a brighter future". But sacking one of the leading figures on the Tory right and bringing back Mr Cameron could pose difficulties for him as he seeks to get his party united behind him and ready for a general election expected next year.

Mrs Braverman said: "It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as Home Secretary." Ominously for Mr Sunak, she added: "I will have more to say in due course."

Lord Cameron, who has been given an immediate peerage so he can return to Government without being an MP, said he had “gladly accepted” the new role as the country faces a “daunting set of international challenges, including the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East”. “While I have been out of frontline politics for the last seven years, I hope that my experience – as Conservative Leader for eleven years and Prime Minister for six – will assist me in helping the Prime Minister to meet these vital challenges,” he wrote on X.

Here are all the Cabinet moves in full:
