Getafe have stated their intention to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United but the La Liga club also have a back-up plan if they cannot get a transfer done.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan in Spain after his parent club announced in March he would be leaving. That followed him being charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour.

Greenwood maintained his innocence throughout and in February this year, all charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. Club chiefs then came to a mutual agreement with the player to release him.

His arrival at Getafe was lauded by the club's fans. And the one-time England international has thus far repaid their faith, scoring three times and also notching two assists in a string of impressive displays.

But despite settling into Spanish life, with his partner and young child living with him, Greenwood remains contracted to United. And his deal does not expire until the summer of 2025, meaning the club could still technically demand a sizeable fee given his current form.

A source close to negotiations reportedly told : “Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer, which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill."

However, an alternative option is also set to be on the table. Getafe, currently 11th in Spain's top flight, are not ruling out the possibility of the current arrangement being extended into the 2023-24 campaign.

"The likelier option is United agree for the loan to be extended as they know that Mason is happy and rebuilding his life," the source added. "They know he needs to grow up and want him to do so — and so far the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone.”

Greenwood scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United after first joining the club at the age of six. His first-team debut came under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in March 2019, aged just 17.
