Erik ten Hag has been handed a one-match touchline ban after receiving a yellow card during Manchester United's 1-0 victory over Luton.

The Dutchman was booked for complaining about the award of a throw-in as the Red Devils recorded their fourth win in five Premier League matches. It was Ten Hag's third Premier League caution of the season and the United boss will now not be on the touchline when they travel to Everton after the international break.

Ten Hag had previously been given a yellow card against Tottenham and Arsenal earlier in the season, and three bookable offences triggers a one-match touchline ban. When quizzed about the yellow card post-match, Ten Hag said: "So it was about a moment that was so clear, a throw-in.

"But it was the second time, and I was so on top of it, and it was so clear and obvious that it was our ball. It was my remark, therefore I got booked."

However, Ten Hag has backed the rest of his coaching team to cope with his absence. "We have a very competent coaching staff and they will take over," he added. "Of course, to a certain point I can be involved, but as I say, my coaching staff are very competent."

Ten Hag will have been buoyed by the resilience shown from United as Victor Lindelof's second-half strike helped earn a narrow win over the Hatters at Old Trafford. The result moves the Red Devils up to sixth, just three points behind the Champions League places.

"Yes and we could have made life more easy by scoring more goals," Ten Hag said on his side's performance. "We created many chances – first half I observed four 100% chances.

"If you get the first and you get the second, it becomes more easy, but if you don’t score you know you can always drop a ball in the box in the wrong position and you are in trouble. We had to fight to the end and it was maybe not the prettiest but if you oversee, I am happy we created many chances."

Rasmus Hojlund, who missed a gilt-edge chance during the first-half, was taken off after appearing to pick up an injury. "In this moment, I can't tell anything about it because I don't know," Ten Hag said on the Denmark international. "We do an assessment and we have to wait 24 hours for the conclusion. So we’ll give the medical team 24 hours to see what the problem is, if there is a problem."
