Warrington Wolves confirm signing of Wigan Warriors' Sam Powell

Warrington Wolves have signed Wigan hooker Sam Powell on a two-year contract.

The three-time Super League winner, 31, had spent his entire career with his hometown club and had a year left on his contract. But with highly-rated Brad O’Neill winning the starting jersey recently, and the arrival of ex-Leeds hooker Kruise Leeming for 2024, Powell knew chances could be limited next term.

Incoming Warrington boss Sam Burgess has moved to take him to Halliwell Jones Stadium where he will also face stiff competition from England hooker Danny Walker and Brad Dwyer, who has rejoined from Hull FC.

Powell, who can also play half-back, admitted: “It’s a massive change for me. As soon as Sam [Burgess] got in contact and said Warrington were interested I was excited about the opportunity. I know it’s going to be a big challenge. The quality of the squad at Warrington, and to work under Sam, is something I think is special.

“I’m looking to bring my experience and leadership to the squad and help to guide the team when I’m on the field. Whenever I’ve played against Warrington in the past it’s always been a great atmosphere under the lights on a Friday night. To be a part of that each week now at The Halliwell Jones Stadium is something I’m really excited about. I can’t wait to meet everyone and get started.”

Wolves director of rugby Gary Chambers, added: “Sam brings a wealth of experience with him to the club. He’s a quality individual who will assist in driving standards. To have a player who has achieved what he has in the game, and who was held in such high esteem at Wigan, can only prove beneficial to us at the Wolves.”

And Burgess added: “Sam brings great depth to our squad and is a proven winner. His leadership will be great for the players and the club over the next two seasons.”

World Club Challenge winner Powell played 272 times for Wigan, his last appearance being in last month's Grand Final victory over Catalans. Warriors head coach Matt Peet said: “Sam Powell leaves Wigan having given his all every second of every day. As a leader at the club, he has made our culture and everyone around him better. I feel personally privileged to have worked with him. We wish him and his family all the best on and off the rugby field.”
