A former Poundland staffer has revealed the one complaint she used to hear from shoppers all the time when she worked at the discount shop - and many people have said they "have a point".

Holly Laing worked at her local Poundland store for three months in 2015 as a Christmas temp, and has said that out of all the things she used to hear on an almost-daily basis, one comment riled her up more than anything else.

The 22-year-old, from Northampton, shared in a quick-witted viral video that when she was working on the tills, she would often have people act surprised when their shopping came to more than they expected, as they had assumed that every item in the shop was priced at just £1.

If you've ever shopped at Poundland then you'll know they do sell a large range of items for a quid, but also have many things on offer for more than that - which Holly claims can sometimes confuse people. The woman shared a TikTok sketch on her @holly_laing account in which she played out an interaction between herself as a Poundland employee, and a customer who had tried to purchase one item that was priced at £3.

In the clip, Holly told the customer her shopping had come to £3, to which the shocked shopper responded: "What's £3? Have you scanned it three times? This is the pound shop, is it not?" Holly then tried to tell the customer that not everything is a pound, but the woman interjected: "Well, that's very misleading. I'll only pay for that if it's a pound."

The video also claimed that even managers found customers who question the prices irritating, as Holly acted out the shopper demanding to see the manager, as well as her boss coming out to chat to the customer. She claimed the customer told the manager: "I'm in the pound shop and your employee is trying to charge me £3 in the pound shop."

Holly said her manager confirmed the item was £3, and then told the shopper that they don't make the prices so it's out of their control. The video ended with the customer fuming: "Disgusting, what a rip-off."

Holly's video has been viewed over a million times, and many people who are regular customers at Poundland admitted that they also get confused about the prices - as the shop's name seems to suggest things will cost £1.

One person wrote: "Customer has a point, I can't lie." While another said: "I mean she kinda has a point. Why call it the pound shop if everything isn't a pound each?" And a third added: "Why doesn't it rename itself to around-a-pound." But other commenters agreed with Holly that the complaints were ridiculous, especially those who also had experience with working in the discount retailer. Someone posted: "As a Poundland employee this happens almost every day." As someone else stated: "When I worked there I kept saying IT'S NOT ONE POUNDLAND."

Some commenters also pointed out that the real reason Poundland has its name isn't that everything should be priced at a pound, but because the prices are usually rounded to a whole pound.

A Poundland spokesman said: "Great video! We've actually sold items above and below £1 for about five years, but whatever the price, what we sell is always amazing value and hard to find elsewhere for less."
